SANTA MONICA HOUSE

Project: Santa Monica House

Location: Maldonado, Uruguay

Size: 636 m2

Status: Project

Partners: Juan Ignacio Ramos & Ignacio Ramos

This house is located in the coastal area of Santa Mónica, Maldonado, Uruguay, on a gently sloping site characteristic of the region. The project is conceived as a modern and minimalist single-family residence, materialized as a horizontal, pure, and seemingly floating volume that establishes a careful and respectful relationship with its natural surroundings.

Raised on concrete pillars, the house minimizes its impact on the terrain, allowing the landscape to flow beneath it. This strategy reinforces the integration with the site while maximizing views toward the sea and enhancing natural ventilation. Access is conceived as a gradual sequence that follows the topography, creating a transition between exterior and interior. An elevated platform leads to an entrance courtyard that precedes the main entry, reinforcing the idea of approach and spatial progression.

The overall organization of the house is structured around a clear axis that orders the spaces and ensures a simple and efficient layout. The main living areas are conceived as open, bright spaces, directly connected to the exterior through large glazed surfaces and outdoor expansions that extend domestic life into the landscape.

The project incorporates internal courtyards that provide natural light and cross ventilation, enhancing the environmental quality of the interior spaces. The roof is conceived as a non-accessible planted surface with native vegetation, contributing both to thermal performance and to the visual integration of the house within its natural context.

The structure is composed of concrete pillars that allow for large spans while minimizing intervention on the ground. Material selection prioritizes durability and low maintenance, combining concrete, wood, and glass.
